There’s lots to like in Judd Apatow’s latest directorial outing, “This is 40”, which manages to always feel very personal to Apatow himself while for the most part being accessible and enjoyable to anyone even close to 40 years old.
Don’t just dismiss it as a girls-night-out comedy: “For a Good Time, Call …” has plenty of heart and raunchy laughs to make both genders happy, and believe it or not, there’s a little wish fulfillment in there for guys, too.
“The Campaign” practically drips with cynicism in its satirical view of elections and candidates. But its gags, while occasionally hilarious, are uninspired and smack of lazy writing.
Make no mistake: “Ted”, the new buddy comedy written and directed by Seth McFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy” and “American Dad”, earns its R-rating. Oh boy, does it earn it.
How much you enjoy “Rock of Ages” will hinge on how much you enjoy any one of the following three things: a) ’80s hard rock, a la Def Leppard, Journey, Poison, etc; b) recent musicals-turned-films; or c) karaoke night.
After all these years, there’s still a lot to like about the “Men in Black” formula, but that formula is not what makes “Men in Black 3” really click. Instead, it’s what’s new to the series that makes the whole thing work: this movie, when all is said and done, belongs to Josh Brolin.
